2006 Annual Letter from the President
******************************************************** 2006 Year-End Message from the President ********************************************************
Fellow Jaycees:
Thank you for another outstanding year! I thank each of you for all your efforts, leadership, and important contributions in 2006. Together, we once again accomplished much and clearly have a lot to be proud of as we look back on this past year.
Here is a short list of some of our accomplishments that had a positive impact. These accomplishments touched lives, made our community a better place, and helped many of us grow and discover much about ourselves and others.
- Had excellent guest speakers throughout the year. Some of these included Andy Dorn, CEO at Greater Buffalo Savings Bank (February), Ted Pietrzak from the Burchfield-Penney Art Center (March), Tim Wanamaker, Executive Director at Buffalo's Office of Strategic Planning (August), and Johnathan Holifield, CEO of Buffalo's Olmsted Parks Conservancy (November).
- Raised over $600 for Junior Achievement at the Bowl-a-thon (March).
- Had a successful and profitable Allentown Art Festival food tent. One of the more profitable operations in recent years (June).
- Collaborated with other groups to paint a large city home in need as part of Brush-up Buffalo (June).
- Hosted our first ever golf tournament fundraiser (September).
- Raised $300 for Buffalo's Olmsted Parks at our annual holiday party (December).
- Continued fun social/educational programming like Book Club, Golf Outings, and the International Dinners (featuring Thai, Mediterranean , and Indian foods to name a few).
- Donated 126 pounds of assorted non-perishable foods to the Food Bank of WNY (November).
- Supported community initiatives and events by Shea's (February), Roswell Park (May), Kenmore Mercy Hospital (May), Buffalo's Olmsted Parks (September), Erie County Commission on the Status of Women (September), and Northwest Buffalo Community Center (November) with either people power or funding.
- Had unique and valuable individual development opportunities, like the Bandits Lacrosse Game (March), Billiards Tutorial (May), Orienteering at Emery Park (August), and the Drivers Insurance Reduction Course (October).
In closing, as my presidency and another year come to an end, I am excited about what the future holds for our chapter and our city. I look forward to working with the 2007 Board as Chairman of the Board. The 2007 leadership team is a strong and impressive group. I encourage all members to attend the January General Membership Meeting (Wednesday, 1/10, 6 pm at 432 Franklin St. , Buffalo ) to meet them, exchange ideas, and listen to their plans. Let's have another fun and memorable year in 2007, building on our successes, and bettering ourselves and our city!
Sincerely,
Jeremy

Mayoral Debate At Hamlin House Aug 23, 2005 7pm |
Self Servants or Public Servants? What the candidates have to say. Four groups host mayoral debate on Buffalo’s next generation issues.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Millennium Group, Buffalo 2032, Buffalo Jaycees and Revitalize Buffalo announce their first joint project –a mayoral debate focusing on issues most affecting the next generation. The debate will be held on Tuesday, August 23 at 7PM (seating begins at 6:15 PM) at the Hamlin House - American Legion Post 665/Troop I located at 432 Franklin Street.
This debate, co-hosted by the leading pro-Buffalo, young professional groups is the first of its kind in Buffalo. It is a collaborative effort by four organizations with different, but compatible missions. The debate will focus on next generation issues – what comes next questions - not focusing on past mistakes. This event is the first locally to harness the power of technology to not just advertise it, but to provide a live broadcast.
Historically, Buffalo has leaned toward single issue or single sponsor events as opposed to cooperative forums. “This event is different. We intend to break the chain of parochial behavior”,) said Deborah Lynn Williams, President of NMG. “We want our groups to be the go-to place for debates, and political and issue discussions region-wide. We want the candidates to look to us each election cycle as the place (to be) to showcase themselves and their political platforms”.
Channel 2’s Stephan Mychajliw will be a hard-hitting moderator - following up if the candidates seem to dodge the questions. WGRZ will promote the event prior to and will have a live feed of the whole debate on its website (www.wgrz.com). Additionally, Buffalo Rising, a successful local magazine and blog will mark the occasion with its first Podcast to its readers – or in this instance its new listeners. Buffalo Cable Channel 22 will be airing the debate repeatedly in the days prior to the primary election on 13 September.

SpeechCraft 2003
On a recent survey conducted to our membership, improving public speaking ranked #1 among specific programs that interested members. It’s no wonder that 15 people signed up for the 6 week course called SpeechCraft. Each week the program featured educational lectures, impromptu speaking, and participants signed up to give speeches and evaluate their peers. The program was sponsored by M&T Bank Toastmasters and the meeting room was donated by Business First. The program was such a success; the participants have asked that it continue indefinitely starting in January. A committee will be formed to map out a program that will be open to all members on a weekly basis. The program will consist of 10 prepared speeches and the manuals will be provided – free of cost. For more information on this project, contact Tony Hackett at 830-0675.

GALS Convention
October 17 - 19 was the GALS Convention (Governmental Affairs & Leadership Seminar Annual) in Amsterdam, NY. The Buffalo Chapter was well represented at this last convention with 12 attendees. Several members grew individually by participating in the "Write-Up" and "Speak-up" Competitions, including Chris Greene – Awarded 1st Place Speak up; Jaime Parker awarded 2nd place and Jennifer Sinatra awarded 3rd place for the Write-up competitions. Some grew professionally by attending the caucuses on Friday and the Elections for the state 2004 officers. Elections for the state can be much different than on the chapter level. Candidates who are interested in a state position have to file before September of that year. Even then it isn't a lock-in because on the day of elections people can be nominated from the election board floor. As the day progressed Buffalo was enrolled in the GALS Feud game, a game show based on the hit "Family Feud". Jane Cudmore, Ann Hackett, Jennifer Sinatra and Jennifer Gorczynski answered questions that dealt with American history and the political arena. Buffalo made it to the last round, but unfortunately lost to the Senators. Special thanks to Jeff Nuzzaco and Scott Kingsley for putting this show together. Then it was time to get dressed for the banquet dinner, meet other officers and members from other chapters. Awards were given out to outstanding chapters and members for the third quarter achievements. Halloween was also a theme at this convention. Among the few appearing at this party were a witch, a vampire, Charlie’s Angels and Bosley, a knight, some cows and a cowboy and a St. Paulie Girl. All in all it was a growing experience. Conventions are the biggest opportunity to grow personally & professionally as a Jaycee. The next Convention is January 16-18, 2004 in Syracuse. The Buffalo Chapter is looking especially forward to this convention because we won the challenge of NYS Individual Development Suzanne Delaney for having the most people participate in the competitions. Buffalo won a case of Champagne from Ms. Delaney and will be collecting this at the next convention. Come out to grow, learn, meet new people and have fun! |

International Dinner at Ulrich's
On October 10, 2003 the Buffalo Jaycees held their monthly International Dinner at Ulrich’s Tavern on Ellicott at Virginia. In honor of the German tradition of Oktoberfest we enjoyed a wonderful meal of German delicacies, including some of the best potato pancakes around, a good steak and local beers. We even threw in some Irish music for good measure. Those of us of Germanic decent greatly enjoyed the opportunity to have some ethnic favorites. And, in the true spirit of the International Dinners, some of our members of a more southern European decent learned what sauerkraut is and that to be German you need to be able to eat hearty meals of sausage, cabbage, potatoes and occasionally veal. Not to mention the Black Forest cake for dessert. After dinner we met a couple more Jaycees at the bar and enjoyed a little more of the American version of Octoberfest. All in all it was a very successful event and everyone who was there had a great time.

International Dinner at Ambrosia Restaurant
Most people agree that friendships and ideas often flourish over a good meal. Monthly International Dinners are a great way for new members to get acquainted with the Junior Chamber in an informal social atmosphere while experiencing cuisine from around the globe. On Friday September 12, Greek dinner at Ambrosia’s, Jaycees sampled spanikopita, souvlaki, and baklava—all washed down with plenty of sweet Greek wine. After dinner some people went out for dessert while others capped off the evening with an after dinner drink.

Prime Training 2003
JCI - Prime Training 2003 was conducted the weekend of September 26th-28th. Congratulations go to Jennifer Sinatra, Ann Hackett and Chari-Lynn Koppel for graduating Prime. Prime Training is a 2 day intensive training program designed by the Junior Chamber International. It is designed for Jaycees who have little or no experience in training to develop coaching skills for use in your chapter, community and workplace. This course increases your confidence in presenting complex information in an understandable and interesting way. As Jennifer said, "It was the best training I have ever received. It touched my mind and my soul. I truly encourage all to take this course."

Curtain Up! 2003
Just as Hurricane Isabel rolled into Western New York on September 19th, Buffalo’s theatre season was ushered in at the city’s annual Curtain Up celebration. Of course the Buffalo Jaycees joined the black tie festivities in high style. The evening began with an address by Mayor Masiello at the Market Arcade, followed by a sumptuous dinner at Atmosphere at Main Street’s Sphere Complex. Buffalo’s impressive variety of theatrical styles became apparent as the group parted ways to attend different productions, including Bitten by a Fly at the Alleyway Theatre, Noises Off at Studio Arena, and Shea’s production of Pageant at the Smith Theatre. Later at the after-party the group rejoined for music, dancing, and to critique the various performances. Fortunately the only significant impact from Hurricane Isabel came in the form of a delicious new drink with the same name featured at the after party. The Board of Directors would like to thank Jennifer Gorczynski for an outstanding job organizing this fun night out for the chapter.
